Skaters to compete in park fundraiser

The Commerce Parks Foundation is hosting a skate competition and fundraiser at 1 p.m. on Sept. 17 at Commerce City Park. The skate competition is open for all ages with events in skateboarding, rollerblading and scooting. The entry fee is a $10 donation to the Commerce Parks Foundation and 100% of the proceeds will go to the Commerce Skate Park Project, a local effort to help build a public skate park in Centennial Park.

“This is the first skate competition we have held but we expect to hold others in the future” Barbara Lenington said. “We hope to have it built by late summer 2012, but it will depend on how much money we raise and what grants we get.”

The 4 events will be a game of S.K.A.T.E, long ollie and high ollie competition, and an obstacle course. Early registration is available and the registration forms and liability waivers can be found at the Morris Recreation Center on the Texas A&M University-Commerce campus. Registration and check-in will begin Saturday at noon, and for those who registered early, check-in will begin at 12:30 p.m. with registration closing promptly at 1 p.m. Those not registered will not be able to compete.

All skaters must have their $10 donation, a completed registration form and a signed release of liability waiver to be eligible to compete. All donators who give at least $10 will be given a coupon for $5 off an event T-shirt and a free $1 raffle ticket for prize drawings for gift certificates from local businesses and restaurants. Many prizes will be given out in all four events.

In the game of S.K.A.T.E. prizes will be given to all the semi-finalists and one grand prize for the winner, for the long and high ollie prizes will be given out in each category, and prizes will also be given out to the skater with the fastest time in the obstacle course.

“Prizes will include skate board decks from Zumiez in Dallas” Lenington said.

Anyone or any business wishing to donate prizes or money should contact Barbara Lenington at the Commerce Parks Foundation and she can be reached by her email at commerceskateparkproject@gmail.com. Anyone who wishes to send a check can send it to 1808 Jefferson St. Commerce, Texas 75428.
