Women’s golf finish second in tourney

Amanda Genovese made a 10-stroke improvement in Tuesday’s final round to lead the Texas A&M University-Commerce women’s golf team to a second-place finish at the Lion Fall Invitational at Webb Hill Country Club in nearby Wolfe City.

Genovese finished ninth overall with a two-day total of 162 (86-76). It is the first top-ten finish in the career for the freshman from Crandall. Fellow freshman Mallory Kempf finished tied for 11th with a two-day total of 163 (81-82) and sophomore Heather Pantalion was 13th with a total of 164 (82-82). Wolfe City native Ali Tanner was 15th with a total of 166 (82-84) as the Lions landed four golfers in the top 16.

Tarleton State took team title honors with a total of 608 (302-306) for a 47-stroke victory over its closest competitor – the Lions. A&M-Commerce shot a 655 (331-324) as they edged out fellow Lone Star Conference foe, Central Oklahoma for runner up honors by four strokes. The Bronchos shot a two-day total of 659 (323-336).

To round out the A&M-Commerce lineup, junior Jamie Gililland was tied for 24th with a 173 (86-87). As individuals, freshman Megan Benites was tied for 24th with Gililland with a 173 (84-89) and freshman Amber Fedro shot a 184 (93-91) for a 39th-place finish.
