So much for the Chicago Cubs winning the World Series in 2007 and ending their 99-year jinx. The Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Cubs in three games in the first round of the National League Playoffs.
The Los Angeles Angels also were swept by the Boston Red Sox in three. Curt Schilling of the Red Sox looked like his old in game three yesterday as the Red Sox won game three 9-1. One big surprise occurred in these playoffs as the Colorado Rockies swept the Philadelphia Phillies in the first round of the playoffs. Colorado has been the hottest team in baseball these past few weeks.
Few people outside of the hardcore Rockies fan could have seen the sweep over Philadelphia coming. The Rockies defeated San Diego to get into the playoffs and then followed that by sweeping the National League Eastern Division Champion Phillies.
Can the Rockies keep the magic alive against the NL Western Division Champs, the Arizona Diamondbacks? Who knows, but if the Rockies somehow defeat the D’Backs (Diamondbacks) in the National League Championship Series, in which the Rockies will probably be heavy underdogs, then this might very well be the team of destiny. The Cleveland Indians ended up taking out the New York Yankees, as well.
I picked the Yankees to win this series in five games over Cleveland, so I see no reason to change my pick now. However if Cleveland does make it to the next round of the playoffs to play Boston, I wouldn’t mind seeing Cleveland go to the World Series.
Cleveland made it to the World Series twice in the 1990’s, losing to Atlanta’s Braves 4 games to 2 in 1995. The Indians also made it to the World Series in 1997 losing to the Florida Marlins in seven games. Boston won the World Series in 2004, and New York’s Yankees have won the fall classic 26 times.
So while the Red Sox and Yankees are probably the best two teams in baseball and one of them will probably win the World Series this year, I’m going with an upset one more time for what it’s worth and picking the Cleveland Indians and Colorado Rockies to play for baseball’s championship in the World Series for 2007. This probably means Arizona will sweep Colorado, and
Boston might very well do the same thing to Cleveland, assuming Cleveland can get by the Yankees which is no sure thing. But going out on a limb is never easy, still I’m going to say Colorado’s Rockies will be the WORLD CHAMPIONS in baseball for this year. If I’m wrong, what the heck it’s not costing me anything but a Coca Cola Classic perhaps.
GO ROCKIES GO.
Denver’s Broncos have won the Superbowl a couple of times and the Colorado Avalanche have won the Stanley Cup a couple of times also. While this has nothing to do with the Rockies, it would be nice if the baseball team in Denver, the Colorado Rockies could win a championship. This would also redeem some of my earlier picks that did not go quite as I hoped.
So Rockies do it, just do it.
