Football team prepares for North Division opponent

The Texas A&M University-Commerce football team (2-5) hung with one of the top ten Division II schools in the nation last week for the second time this season, only to lose in the final minutes. This week, the Lions will attempt to avoid a let down against the winless East Central University (0-7). The Lone Star Conference doormat is not just another opponent for the Lions. A&M-Commerce needs to sweep their last three games, all against LSC North Division oppenents, in order to have the best chance at winning the North Division. “They’ve been through three quarterbacks and converted a wide receiver to running back, so they’ve had their own growing pains to deal with,” said head football coach Guy Morriss. “It’s just a matter of time before they get their first win. We just have to make sure it’s not against us.” While winning the North Division doesn’t mean the Lions make the playoffs, Morriss still sees it as an important goal. “It helps us sell the program during the recruiting season,” he said. “It also means that, next season, our players will have higher expectations.” With several seniors leaving at the end of this season, Morriss knows that the Lions will need to recruit heavily in order to challange the top-heavy Lone Star Conference, which is led by the number one Division II school in the nation, Abilene Christian University. “We’ll need defensive lineman and defensive backs,” he said. “We’ll look for speed and athleticism at every position.”
