Soccer falls after downing No. 2 Tampa

Coming off a win over No. 2 Tampa on Friday, the Texas A&M University-Commerce women’s soccer team dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to regionally-ranked Barry.

The host Bucs (3-2), ranked No. 9 in the NCAA South Regional rankings, capitalized on a short-handed Lions squad to get the equalizer in the 79th minute and the gamewinner in the 95th minute for the victory.

A&M-Commerce (2-2) opened the game with five-straight shots until a crossing pass from sophomore Meagan Lasley got ahead of the Barry attack and found junior Melissa DoRemus for a header and Lions goal in the 22nd minute. It is the first goal of the season and the 17th of the career for DoRemus to move her into a tie for fifth place all-time in school history. Barry answered the Lions’ tally as Michelle Tarasiuk scored the first of her two goals on a 35-yard free kick in the 26th minute.

Lasley added her second goal of the season in the 54th minute when she greeted and beat the new Barry goalkeeper on a challenge for the go-ahead goal.

The Lions continued to challenge the opposition, but the Bucs got the equalizer when Elanna Brady lifted a corner kick into the box and Carley Radcliff headed home the goal to tie the contest at 2-2 in the 79th minute.

Towards the end of regulation, the Lions lost two players (three throughout game) due to yellow card accumulation to give Barry an 11-8 advantage in the final minutes and eventual overtime. Barry capitalized in the extra stanza, but the Lions did not go down easy. Sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer Alvarado made a save that led to a corner kick for the host Bucs. On the ensuing corner kick, Tarasiuk scored her second goal of the contest and the game-winning tally.

On Friday, for the second-straight year, the Texas A&M University-Commerce women’s soccer program has knocked off the No. 2 ranked team in the nation. The Lions posted a 3-2 victory over previously undefeated and second ranked Tampa on Friday afternoon in Miami, Florida.

A&M-Commerce got on the board first in the 41st minute on the first career goal by freshman Dana Deerinwater, who scored on a header via sophomore Lasley to put the Lions in front 1-0. In the second half, the Lions added to their lead on a Tamara Geels header from a corner kick by Megan Monroe to extend the A&M-Commerce lead to 2-0 in the 71st minute. In the last 10 minutes, both teams turned up the offensive pressure. Alvarado rose to the occasion making three saves in the final minutes. After giving up a goal to Tampa’s Shelby Kuni, A&M-Commerce sophomore Lacy Alexander scored her first goal of the season in the 87th minute, which also proved to be the game-winning tally.
