Runaway trends to help failing wardrobes pass

School’s back in session, so it’s time to dive back into the books and excel in the classroom. But that doesn’t mean that you have to flunk in the fashion department. Below are the top five trends straight from the runways-and how to make them appropriate for a college student.

1. Menswear Inspired

Low slung trousers. Vest and button-down shirt combos. Oxford boots and loafers. These traditional masculine stand-bys have entered the feminine arena offering women realistic alternatives to the demure and dainty dresses of summer. Watch out for proportions with this trend, especially with wide-leg trousers. Balance the loose look on bottom with tailored fitted tops to maintain a favorable silhouette. And ladylike touches like lace, velvet, and satin bring the look together.

2. Color

Don’t put away those bright accessories just yet! The bright colors of summer-blues, yellows, reds-are still big for fall. Make use of black to update your look and make the flashy hues fall appropriate. Use your birth stone as your color compass for the fall to incorporate the warm jewel tones into your wardrobe. Magenta, emerald, sapphire and teal are fall favorites. And add a silver or gold accessory. That’ll immediately inject some flavor to your autumn attire.

3. Plaid

Don’t be afraid to go mad for plaid! Be creative with this trend. Think outside the box and cinch that sweater dress you’ve been dying to wear with a plaid belt. Or let a plaid oxford boot peek out from underneath those voluminous wide-leg trousers. Keep your overall look simple and subdued and let the plaid take the front seat. You’ll get extra points in Style 101.

4. Wide-leg Denim

After seasons of the skinny jean, denim wide leg trousers are a nice alternative to the skinny trend. Universally flattering for all figures, this fall trend-when paired with a structured blazer and airy camisole-will up the style quotient exponentially moving you to the head of the class in the style department.

5. Preppy

It’s OK to be a prep; after all, we’re in college. But this fall, designers have made it easier than ever to take part in the “geek-chic” movement. Think argyle sweaters, Mr. Rogers’s cardigans, oxford button-downs and a messenger bag to hold your textbooks. Add a pair of reading glasses and you’ll have the looks to go with the smarts!
