Do I need to bring this jacket? Do I have enough shampoo? I have an entire trailer full of random things; will it all fit into my tiny dorm room that I’ll be sharing with someone else?
Needless to say, I had an extensive amount of concerns on my mind as I moved from my comfortable home into a bleak, foreign dorm room.
Whitley Hall was by far not my first choice as far as dorms go. The dorm that I previously wanted to be assigned to could at least mooch off wireless Internet, so I assumed there was wireless Internet in Whitley. This was my first mistake.
Now, I am not a computer junkie by any means; however, I do use the computer a decent amount. I need Internet access to write papers, access online homework and research my next tattoo, of course. I assumed that Whitley would naturally have wireless Internet for all of the previous reasons, except maybe the last. This was my second mistake and, well, you know what they say about someone who assumes.
Whitley doesn’t have wireless Internet, but what they do have are awkwardly placed Internet jacks. My room has two, one in each room. For anyone with a roommate in a single room dorm, they have to juggle Internet access between two people through an Ethernet (Cat 6) cable, which is not provided. Best Buy sells this cable for $25.99.
If I want wireless Internet, then I have to buy a wireless router, and those things don’t come cheap. Best Buy sells wireless routers in a variety of brands with prices ranging from $39.99 to $199.99.
There is a ray of hope. Wireless Internet should be up and running in all academic buildings by Dec 18. Then again, that is the last day of the first semester. It seems like the university is lagging behind and needs to keep their residence buildings up to speed for all their student’s needs.
