Honors College boasts first med school student
For the first time since its establishment in 2007, the Honors College of Texas A&M University-Commerce has had a member accepted into medical school. Senior chemistry and biology double major Jeffery Sun received acceptance into the UTMB-Galveston medical program.
Sun has demonstrated the qualities of an honors student through his GPA and involvement in academia, such as undergraduate research for his honors thesis. But, despite his records, he was not entirely sure he would be accepted into any of the medical schools to which he applied.
"I applied to most of the medical schools in Texas including UT Southwestern, UTMB-Galveston, UT Houston, UT San Antonio, Texas A&M Health Science Center and Texas Tech Health Science Center," Sun said. "I made the mistake of sending in my application late in the application period, [and] I was worried that most of the available positions had already been filled when I went to my interviews. Therefore, it was definitely reassuring to find out that I got accepted."
Sun received email notification that he has been given a spot in the University of Texas Medical Branch program and is still waiting to hear from one of the other contenders.
"Right now, I would say that I am 80 percent sure that I will be going to UTMB-Galveston for medical school," he said. "However, since I am still on the waiting list for UT Southwestern, there is a possibility that, if a position opens up between now and mid-May, I could change my mind and go to UT Southwestern instead."
Although Sun has dedicated his undergraduate experience to preparation for medical school, he feels the credit for his achievements cannot go to him alone, having received opportunities and assistance that put him where he is today.
"I believe that I owe most of my undergraduate accomplishments to the Honors College, because the Honors College provided an environment where I could be 100 percent focused on my classes without worrying about the financial aspect of my college career," he said. "In addition, by agreeing to complete an undergraduate thesis before graduation, I was encouraged to engage in undergraduate research. In my opinion, my research experience was a critical factor that set me apart from the rest of the applicants for medical school."
Sun also said the departments that he worked within the most were necessary preparation for this step in his education.
"I also want to acknowledge that both the chemistry and biology departments provided excellent classes that prepared me for the MCAT (Medical College Admissions Test)," he said. "Without the help from the Honors College and the chemistry and biology departments of this university, I might not have been able to obtain these accomplishments."
