A car traveling northbound on Monroe Street crashed into a residence earlier this evening near the intersection of Monroe Street and Stonewall. According to the driver, he swerved to avoid an oncoming car that was traveling at excessive speed. The car caused significant damage to the residence, including possible structural damage. The exact cost of the damage is not known at this time, but is up to the thousands of dollars, according to Commerce Police Department Crime Prevention and Warrants Officer Alex Suarez.

A woman inside the residence was struck by debris resulting from the crash and was transported to Greenville Presbyterian Hospital. Her condition is unknown according to Suarez.

The driver was released on scene and there will be no criminal investigation, Suarez said.
