Above the Law

"Nanny states" litigate citizens into corner

Let the insanity begin….

Oh wait, it has already begun, and we have caused it.

I use the word "we" because, as the American populace, we are all responsible for the actions of our leaders.  These leaders are elected by us, represent us globally and locally and govern our lives from day to day.

Our freedoms do not concern the majority of them, because they are not "connected" to us in any conventional way and live primarily above the law themselves.  This makes it very easy for them to pass legislation based on our reactions.

Initially, when something happens here that we do not like, we want a solution.  So we raise hell and get legislation passed addressing the issue.

Great!

Problem solved right?

Wrong.  The issue may be addressed for the time being, but it has not solved the problem.  People will still be breaking the law.  So what is our solution?

Pass more laws or make them stricter.

Surely, now that we have set in place these new restrictions everything will be okay, right?

Wrong once again.  It doesn't matter if you make death the penalty for drunk driving, people will still be doing it.

What ends up happening is the regulations put there to deal with a few are now affecting everyone else that was not involved.  It is called the snowball effect.

Let's look at the drunk driving example.  Initially laws were put in place because people were dying at the hands of drunk drivers. The next step was to put breathalyzers in offenders' cars.  Okay I am still with you here.

Along the way we decided to give the police the right to set up random roadblocks.  At this point, everyone on the road is affected, because it creates traffic jams and also uses up money and time the police could be utilizing elsewhere.  It is getting shaky, but I am even okay with this to some degree.

Now there are groups out there who want to just go ahead and put breathalyzers in everyone's vehicles to prevent anyone from driving under the influence.  Wait, what? Help me!  The snowball is running me over!

I am not advocating drunk driving.  People who do it should be punished.  I am simply showing how these things work and get out of hand.

These groups are well organized, connected and have political pull.  They have been very successful at getting their agendas passed.  We should all be very scared for our liberties, because groups like these are the ones who have been taking them away for years.

They chip away our liberties little by little so we do not notice, and one day we wake up and realize we have lost some serious rights.

I know we all need rules to live by, but I am almost brain dead from beating my head against the wall from thinking about all of the liberties we are losing every day.

The law of unintended consequences is in full swing here and we are blind to it.
