COMMERCE, Texas --After a pair of impressive performances at the Incarnate Word and Tarleton State Invitationals, Texas A&M-Commerce will remain home this weekend, hosting the Lion Invitational at Memorial Stadium Saturday, March 26. The meet gets underway at 10 a.m. with the throwing events, with the running events beginning at 12:30 p.m.
The Lions will square off against five other teams Saturday, welcoming Lon Morris College, Southwest Christan College, Texas Wesleyan, UT-Tyler and Wiley College to Commerce. The six-team event marks the final home event for A&M-Commerce in the 2011 track and field season.
A number of Lions have had strong starts to the 2011 season and look to continue those into Saturday. For the men, Craig Shelton has posted a pair of top-10 finishes in both the 110 meter and 400 meter hurdles, placing first in both events at Tarleton State. In the field events, Marquis Stimpson is also coming off a pair of first place finishes at the TSU invitational, sitting first in his flight in both the shotput and discus. Daniel Dia placed second in the Discus in Stephenville after placing fifth at Incarnate Word.
For the women, Starasia Childs has compiled five top-five finishes already on the year, including taking first in the triple jump in both of the year's first two tournaments. Charnita Hollands and Jakesia King have been solid for the Lady Lions in the sprints, while senior Kate Donovan continues to lead A&M-Commerce in the distance runs.
Saturday should be a great day to head out to Memorial Stadium and watch the Lions, with temperatures expected to be in the low 80's with plenty of sunshine. Full meet results will be available at the conclusion of the Lion Invitational at LionAthletics.com.
