Golf, track lead weekend sports

Golf is the highlight for A&M-Commerce sports this weekend, as both the men's and women's teams begin play in the Lone Star Conference Championship tournament on Sunday. The tournament is being played at WinStar Golf Course in Thackerville, Okla., and will run through Tuesday, April 20.

The men's team has been led by a number of players during the spring season. Early on, freshmen Tyler Duffy, Darren Whitehouse, and T.J. McColl performed the best in the Lions' first three tournaments.

After an early season setback with an injury to his wrist, senior Danny Jun was A&M-Commerce's top performer at the Grand Canyon Invitational March 28-30, finishing with a 54-hole total of 216 and leading the team to a 12th place finish. In the most recent tournament, the Kickingbird Classic hosted by the University of Central Oklahoma, junior Dustin Gideon finished tied for 26th place, topping the A&M-Commerce squad.

Senior Heather Pantalion and junior Kathleen May have been topping the women's charts this spring. Pantalion has finished the best out of A&M-Commerce players in two of the five tournaments, while May has done the same one time. The other two tournaments finished with both players tied for the team lead.

A solid performance in this tournament could see the Lions qualify for the NCAA Super Regional tournament, which runs May 3-5 in Duncan, Okla.

Track and Field

The track teams will compete in the Michael Johnson Invitational in Waco on Saturday. The meet, hosted by Baylor, is the next-to-last competition for A&M-Commerce before the LSC Championship meet on May 7 and 8, in San Angelo, Texas.

Women's Soccer

The A&M-Commerce women's soccer team will play two home games over the weekend as they prepare for the fall season. On Saturday, the Lions will take on Division I Louisiana Tech at 3 p.m., while Sunday will feature a 4 p.m. kickoff in a game against club team Sting Blue.

"The off-season is always a good time for players to earn positions on the team," head coach Neil Piper said. "These upcoming games go a long way in determining who will be playing in the fall. So far, things have been going pretty well."
