Playhouse performance puts two plays into one

The Texas A&M University-Commerce Playhouse is introducing a pair of edgy, hard hitting one act plays to be performed Feb. 28- March 3 at 8:00 p.m. with a matinee on March 4 at 3 p.m.

For theatre major and female lead A'Mari Rocheleau, her upcoming performance in "1000 Proms" is significant as it will serve for her honors thesis.

"I'm a senior member of the honors college at Texas A&M-Commerce and as such, I have to write a thesis to graduate," Rocheleau said. "As a theatre major, I was slightly unsure of what that was going to entail, but after talking to my advisor, Dr. Carrie Klypchak, I realized that I wanted to do something acting related and the idea of a one-woman show came up. We sort of ran with that idea and found '1000 Proms' and I fell in love with it."

Rocheleau's one-woman show will be paired with "Dump Monkeys", a show written by A&M-Commerce's playwright in residence, Jim Tyler Anderson.

"'Dump Monkeys' takes place in a post-apocalyptic setting, where outcasts are hunted like animals," theatre major and cast member Aimee Whitman said, "There are four characters who all come from different walks of life yet all find that they share similarities."

Both productions contain adult themes, language, and realistic violence and therefore, are not suitable for children.

Rocheleau encourages students and those who want to "see something different in the realm of theatre" to attend the duo performances.

"I hope people come into the show with an open mind and really let themselves leave reality for just a moment," Rocheleau said.

Tickets are $10.00 for non-student adults, $8.00 for senior citizens, and $3.00 for students. For more information or to make reservations for the event call 903-886-5900 or email: playhouseboxoffice@tamu-commerce.edu
