Women's basketball heads to Denton
The Texas A&M University-Commerce women's basketball team is in action this weekend, as they travel to Denton to take on Texas Woman's University. The Pioneers are 10-7 overall and just recently lost their first Lone Star Conference North Division game of the season to Northeastern State, who sits on top of the LSC North with a 5-0 conference record. TWU's 4-1 LSC record puts them in 3rd place in the conference standings.
Senior Megan Hashman and sophomore Jessica Hanna lead the Pioneers. Both average 13.9 points per game, and Hanna is a 44.4 percent shooter from the three-point line.
Junior Kayla Weaver is team leader in rebounding, averaging 6.6 per game. She also averages 10.5 points per game.
The A&M-Commerce ladies sit 6th in the LSC North Division table, as they are 1-4 in conference games and 4-13 overall this season. The Lions are currently on a three-game losing streak after a 73-55 loss on Wednesday to the University of Central Oklahoma. A&M-Commerce stayed with the Bronchos for much of the first half but failed to cope with the increased defensive pressure put on by UCO in the second frame.
"We can play a half of basketball like nobody else in the country," A&M-Commerce women's head coach Nicole Anderson said. "We didn't respond the way we need to respond, so my comments to our team were simply, ‘Hey, we win the ball game if we take care of the ball.'"
Junior Mattilyn McIntyre was one of the top performers against UCO on Wednesday. She's currently averaging 15.2 points per game and 4.2 rebounds per game. Although Genevieve Campbell had a quiet night against the Bronchos, she sits third in the team's scoring chart with 11.9 points per game and a .404 field goal percentage.
In the corresponding game last season, A&M-Commerce came away with a 96-94 victory at the Kitty Winter Magee Arena in Denton. Campbell scored eight points against the Pioneers in that match-up, while current senior Ashley Murphy scored 7 points and tallied seven rebounds.
Hanna scored 20 points and was 2-5 from beyond the arc as a freshman against A&M-Commerce last season. Sophomore Casey Pool, who was also freshman at the time, scored 16 points, while current senior Jessica Durr scored 10 points and got 12 rebounds against the Lions back in 2009.
