New Facebook a hit

Even if you don't have a Facebook account of your own, you've at least heard of the social networking superpower. For the majority of college students, owning a Facebook account is as natural as driving a car. For years we've navigated our way through the Web site, requesting friends, posting videos, and adding every kind of application imaginable.

Then, suddenly, Facebook unveiled a new layout, and all hell broke loose. Facebook users were forming groups, boycotting the new Facebook layout and expounding upon the benefits of the old layout. Facebook users were discussing the new layout and the majority of them expressed strong disapproval.

At first, I wasn't a fan either. It was strange and seemed pretty awkward to navigate through. After all, where was my wall? Where were all my applications?

It's a well-understood fact that as human beings we don't like change. We try to combat our inability to control so much in our lives by being very controlling over the things we can. Some of us get on Facebook everyday; some even have it set up as a home page. Either way, many Facebook users rely on Facebook as a primary means of interacting with friends, specifically those in other towns and states. So this layout change definitely threw me off when I first saw it because I had seen the old one so many times.

It took me a few days to get used to the new layout, and a few more to actually start liking it. Once I understood the reasons behind all of the new features and how to use them, I liked the new layout.

Why did Facebook mess with a good thing? Well, the new layout is superior to the old one in several ways. It groups all of your content in tabs, eliminating those pages that just went on forever. Everyone had at least one friend who's wall was buried somewhere beneath about one million applications. With the new layout, you can get to the wall much more easily, as well as the profile information (where the person is from, what they're interested in, etc.). Everything is cleaner and easier to access.

You may not like the layout, but the world we live in is a fast-paced one with constantly changing technology. As young adults in this world, we're used to adapting to new technology as it comes our way. So let's quit the bellyaching and take advantage of the new layout.
