Women's basketball team hopes to snap losing streak
Men's basketball looks to keep up winning ways
The A&M-Commerce men's basketball team goes into this weekend off of an overtime win against Angelo State 102-98 yesterday. While they remain undefeated at 5-0, the women's team has lost all of its five games, including a 95-69 result against Angelo State last night.
Both teams now take the trip to Abilene Christian University tomorrow with goals regarding their records: the men hope to keep this run going, while the women will hope to get one in the win column. This is the worst start by a Lions women's basketball team since a 1-4 record in the first five games back in the 2003-04.
Senior Mattilyn McIntyre has started this season where she left off the last, averaging 18 points and tying the team lead in assists with 10.
Their opponents tomorrow, ACU, are also winless through five games to start the season. Autumn Whitaker is leading the way with 16.5 points per game and an average of 4.5 rebounds per game. Another potential threat comes in the form of Kelsey Smith, who leads the team in rebounding with 9.6 per game and is averaging 14.6 points per game.
The Wildcats men's team has had a bumpy start to their 2010-11 campaign, as they hold a 2-2 record. Zach Williams has been one of the top performers so far with 17.3 points per game, and that included a 29 point night against Dallas Baptist back in November. Giordan Cole is averaging 11.3 points per game and leads the team in rebounding with 4.8 per game.
Junior transfer Desmond King has had an immediate impact in the first few games for A&M-Commerce, as he leads the team with 15.2 points per game and 6.6 rebounds per game. Just behind him is senior Brian Singleton with 13.8 points per game and 24 total assists. Junior Brad Hambrick has the best shooting percentage from three-point land with .385.
The women will play first tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m., and they will be followed by the men's game at approximately 4 p.m. After these games, both teams get a week's rest before returning home on Saturday, Dec. 11, to face West Texas A&M. This contest will be the women's first at home this season.
