The National Broadcasting Society will host the second annual Communication Career Day April 1 at the Sam Rayburn Student Center. The event starts at 9:30 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m.
Communication Career Day consists of multiple sessions with mass communication professionals and is open to high school students and all students at A&M-Commerce.
“The National Broadcasting Society started doing this event last year as a way to help those who can’t go to national events learn more about the field,” President of National Broadcasting Society at A&M-Commerce Blanca Duran said.
The various sessions include guest speakers in news, radio broadcasting and operations, advertising sales and TV graphics, broadcast station management and operations, alternative media careers and video production and film careers.
“This year we are adding to the event,” Duran said. “We have two new sessions where students can go out and shoot with another student from R-TV and a newscast where a whole crew is needed to make a newscast happen. This way they also get the experience of what it is like to be in that field.”
Communication Career Day is also a competition for high school students. Awards are given in multiple categories, ranging from short film to news package. All entries are submitted ahead of time for judging.
The National Broadcasting Society and Professor in the Mass Media Communication & Theatre Department Dr. Tony DeMars have worked together to plan this event, which can benefit students interested in a communication career.
“If students out there are thinking about a career in mass communications, they need to think about coming,” Director of Career Development Tina Boitnott said. “It’s a free event.”
Many students who plan to attend see various benefits for having a Career Day that specifies in communication professions.
“I’m going, because this is a great opportunity for me to see what public relations work is really like,” senior Amanda Rios said. “It’s also a chance to possible get my foot in the door somewhere.”
