Devondrick Walker nabs LSC Player of the Week honors
Sophomore forward Devondrick Walker has been named the Lone Star Conference's Co-Offensive Player of the Week, announced today by the league office. It is the first weekly honor of Walker's career as he shares the award with Tarelton State's Fabian Wilson.
Walker was clutch for A&M-Commerce as the Lions notched a pair of wins last week en route to clinching the eight seed in the Lone Star Conference Championships. He led the Lions in scoring, recording 17 points in the 75-72 victory at Abilene Christian, then pumped in a career-best 24 as the Lions held off Angelo State 83-78 Saturday.
For the week, Walker shot 57.9 percent from the floor and 50.0 percent from three-point range, but hit 15 of his 16 free throws (93.8 percent), including a handful down the stretch in both games. Walker also averaged five rebounds while dishing out a career-best three assists in the win over the Rams.
For the season, Walker ranks fourth on the team averaging 9.2 points and 4.0 rebounds per game while starting 20 games for A&M-Commerce. He has scored in double digits in 11 games on the year but has come on strong in the second half of the year, scoring 10 or more points in six of the last eight games. Walker has also been clutch from the free throw line for the Lions, ranking second on the team shooting 75.8 percent.
The weekly honor is the first in Walker's A&M-Commerce career and the second of the season for coach Sam Walker's Lions as senior forward Desmond King was named Offensive Player of the Week on Dec. 21. Tarleton State's Chris Harrell took home Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Walker and the rest of the Lions now head to Allen for the 2012 Lone Star Conference Championships where they will face top-seeded Midwestern State in the quarterfinals at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday evening at the Allen Special Events Center. A&M-Commerce heads into the postseason as the hottest team in the conference, having won its last three games.
