Central Oklahoma wins Lone Star Conference
The Bronchos of the University of Central Oklahoma won the Lone Star Conference championship on Feb. 6, in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. They defeated the LSC South's first placed Tarleton State University 68-52 in the championship game.
The Bronchos stampede started in their first game of the conference tournament against Eastern New Mexico University, whom they beat by a whopping 22 points. Their second game, against West Texas A&M University, was the closest of their run for the title at 66-63. Three of the Bronchos top players scored at least 14 points in the final; junior Brent Friday led with 16 points and five assists, and senior Dauntae Williams and sophomore Victor Driver rounded out the leader board with 14 points a piece. Sophomore Tucker Phillips led the team defensively with nine rebounds.
Tarleton defeated Southwestern Oklahoma State and Midwestern Oklahoma State to accompany Central to the finals. West Texas A&M had a notable rise through the ranks, beating LSC North's third-placed Cameron University 75-59 in the first round of tournament play. They then went on to the semi-finals where they lost to Central in double overtime 66-63.
Texas A&M University-Commerce was defeated in the first round by Midwestern 82-67. Midwestern then advanced to the semi-finals and were defeated by Tarleton 74-50.
The Lone Star Conference announced their All-Tournament team that was dominated by Central Oklahoma. Dauntae Williams from Central earned the MVP award in the tournament and was named to the all-tournament team along with his fellow Bronchos Brent Friday and Victor Driver. Tarletons' Corin Henry, Midwestern's Chris Hagan, and West Texas' LaDarius Hall were this year's picks for the all-tournament team.
