Editorial: Res life changes are positive steps forward

On January 22, 2010

Over the winter break Texas A&M University-Commerce made some changes to the housing program and we commend them.

The changes brought in new washers and dryers for residence halls and changed a contract with cable TV to one with DirecTV.

We see these changes are a positive push toward addressing student issues. The addition of new washers and dryers will make washing clothes much more convenient for all students living in residence halls. The switch to DirecTV will eventually bring 70 channels to all students living on campus.

This is the direction the school needs to go.

Now that these changes have been implemented we hope the university will look into fixing and improving other issues on campus. We applaud their efforts in improving the current heating and air conditioning systems on campus as well. These are all positive changes and we feel this will give a much more homey feeling to students.

All of these aspects are conducive to relaxing as well.

Students put in long hours preparing for projects and exams. Alleviating some of the stress they may have about minor issues such as a laundry can only be a good thing.

The only problem we find with these changes is the lack of notification on the construction projects. Although positive, we think it would have been prudent of the university to let students know what to expect when returning for the spring semester. The holes in the ground that line the walking mall may confuse some students and harm some level of comfort with the campus they may have.

Still this issue is minor compared to all the good these changes will make. We hope the university continues to push forward with improvements to the campus, making it a better environment for everyone.
