Fleishman features "Fish" photo gallery
"A Fish Story", the solo exhibition by Sam Fleishman, debuted in conjunction with the grand opening of the Student Access and Success One Stop Shop, located on the corner of Stonewall St. and Campbell St., on Oct. 8.
Thursday was the opening reception for students from 3:00 to 4:30 pm in which there were food and refreshments, including free ice cream and t-shirts for all guests. Friday, Oct. 9 was the opening reception of the exhibition for faculty and the community.
The photography department shows four to five galleries a year, and they asked Sam Fleishman to feature his photos.
"They needed photos for the walls and Vaughn Wascovich asked if I'd like to display my artwork from Japan," Sam Fleishman, the photographer said.
All of the photos, which range from pictures of the market workers to cut up fish, all the way to octopus tentacles/suckers, paint an intricate picture of the world-renowned Tsukii fish market.
The subject struck a chord with Fleishman.
"[The gallery is] to inform people about seafood in Japan," he said. "The Tsukiji fish market is unique to Japan, because their diet relies on fish and veggies. It is the largest market of its kind in the world and is a large tourist attraction."
Diverse groups of people were in attendance and many were there for the opening of the One Stop Shop, but all wandered through the back hallways of the building, through the room where The East Texan used to be printed, to experience Fleishman's art.
"I didn't know there'd be one [a gallery opening], but I like it a lot," Jocelynn Young, freshman biology major said. "I really like the picture with the light bulbs."
Many students, not just photography majors, attended the reception even though they were not familiar with the art.
"I came to see his artwork because I heard it was really good," Elizabeth Kolawole, freshman biology major said. "I don't know anything about photography, but I liked it."
Anyone who could not make it to the receptions on Thursday or Friday should not worry. The photo installation will remain on the walls of the One Stop Shop through at least December until the end of the semester.
"People should definitely come by and look around," Fleishman said.
