Meet the candidate: Johnny Kirkpatrick
SGA Presidential candidate
1. Why do you want to be the SGA President?
Since I have been in Student Government I have wanted to be SGA President, but it wasn't until now I felt I was ready to take the position. In preparation I believe I have taken the right steps necessary to mold myself into an ideal Student Body President. I have a passion to achieve goals and get things done. Other people have also suggested that I should be President because I have the qualities necessary to hold this position. I am Focused, Analytical, Futuristic, and Strategic. These qualities will help continue the improvement and promotion of SGA.
2. What do you feel that you offer the student body, if elected?
Being a masters student and a recent graduate from A&M Commerce I believe that I have a good view of what both Graduate and Undergrad students are going through. I am dedicated and driven in everything that I do and will strive to have the students voices heard. I have been in leadership positions before so being in this position will be an easy transition.
3. What are some of your goals as the SGA President?
Some goals I have set as SGA President would be to continue to increase the presence of SGA even more on campus. This goal has been a goal of Student Government already, so I feel we should continue this goal to better serve the students. Another goal I have is to make the transition process easier between senates. We have just recently rebuilt our foundation and constitutional documents to allow us to do this, in the past it has been a problem continuing different projects that require a year or more to complete. That is mainly because there was no transition period, and there are no documents or files handed to the next person to take that position. So instead of having that time where senators are lost and have to reinvent the wheel, they will be informed and ready to get to work. It is my goal to ensure that a process is set up to make the transition smooth and efficient. This will allow more work to get completed from the time a new senate gets into office and until they leave office.
4.What sets you apart from your opponents?
I believe that my experience sets me apart from my opponents. I have been in Student Government for 3 years now and this last year I have had the honor of being Vice President. Being Vice President has allowed me to see firsthand how the President should work and how the Exec works as well. I now know what works and what definitely doesn't work. I have also had the chance to learn the different processes for doing necessary tasks that shortens the learning curve gap.
