Department opens doors for Art Day
The Texas A&M University-Commerce art department will be hosting the university's annual Art Day on Oct. 31.
Art Day is a full day dedicated to hands-on workshops, informational sessions, portfolio reviews and a scholarship competition. Information sessions are scheduled for parents, teachers and students to discuss all the different areas of the art department.
"Last year we had about 50 high school participants who represented most of the state," head of the A&M-Commerce art department, Joseph Daun said. "The event is designed to give high school students exposure to high quality programming. We currently have about 25 pre-registered, but we are hoping that we will have at least 50 students participating again this year. Some workshops are already full."
Art Day gives high school juniors and seniors, transfer students and junior college art and photography majors the opportunity to compete with university students for various scholarships ranging from $100-$2,000.
"We have set aside $2,000 from our annual Holiday Art Sale for portfolio scholarships for incoming students," Daun said. "Students who participate in the event will also qualify for our normal round of scholarship awards given in March and April."
Art Day will be held in conjunction with Mane Event Preview Day. Mane Event Preview Day allows prospective students to explore the different areas of A&M-Commerce such as admissions, housing, academic departments and student organizations. The combined event will allow students and faculty to participate in events held both at Mane Event Preview Day and Art Day.
Mane Event Preview Day registration and Art Day registration are to be completed separately. Registration for Mane Event Preview Day includes a continental breakfast and lunch in the Sam Rayburn Student Center as well as eligibility to win a scholarship in a scholarship drawing.
Participants in Art Day must first register for Mane Event Preview Day through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at 903-886-5102 and then register for Art Day at the Art Day booth located inside the art department. The Art Day booth is also where participants in the Art Day scholarship competition submit their portfolio.
