Golf teams in weekend action, track meet washed out
The Texas A&M University-Commerce golf teams were in action both before and after Spring Break. The women's team finished fifth out of 12 teams at the East Central University/Oak Hill Women's Collegiate Invitational and the men placed eighth at the Red River Intercollegiate over March 8-9. The A&M-Commerce women then hosted the Lion Invitational at Tanglewood Golf Resort and Spa in Pottsboro, Texas, on March 15-16, finishing seventh. Also over the break, A&M-Commerce track and field had a meet canceled.
Senior Heather Pantalion led the way for A&M-Commerce in the ECU/Oak Hill Women's tournament with an 86, as she finished tied for 13th. Just behind her was junior Kathleen May, who finished in 19th with an 87. Northeastern State University won the tournament.
Pantalion and May shot 24 over par, 168, each and finished tied for 20th individually at the Lion Invitational for A&M-Commerce. Also finishing in the top 30 was junior Mallory Kempf, as she tied for 26th with a score of 170 (82-88). The tournament was won by Angelo State.
The Abilene Christian men won the Red River Invitational with a total score of 593, and they also took the individual title as Alex Carpenter beat Mitch Molen of Midwestern State in a playoff.
For the Lions, freshman Darren Whitehouse led the way with a 154 (76-78) and tied for 14th. Senior Danny Jun was next in line, as he shot an 82 on the first day and 75 on the second. His overall score of 157 was good enough to be tied for 28th.
Both the women and the men are currently competing in the Midwestern State Invitational, which is taking place in Wichita Falls, Texas. The final round is scheduled for Tuesday.
In track and field, the men's and women's teams were scheduled to take part in the Dr Pepper Invitational, hosted by Baylor University, in Waco on March 20. Their weekend was cut short due to inclement weather, and the meet was canceled. They will now turn their attention to the University of Texas at Arlington Bobby Lane Invitational scheduled for this Saturday, March 27th.
