A&M-Commerce golf prepares for second tournament
Texas A&M University-Commerce men's and women's golf highlight the first sports weekend in March. The men will be competing in their second spring tournament, the two-day Red River Intercollegiate, starting Sunday, March 7. The tournament is co-hosted by Lone Star Conference rivals Cameron and the University of Central Oklahoma, and is taking place at WinStar Golf Course in Thackerville, Okla.
Earlier this week, the A&M-Commerce men finished fifth at the Pepsi Crawford/Wade Invitational, with a combined score of 627.
Senior Eric Westerman and freshman Tyler Duffy were the best among Lions competitors, as both had tournament scores of 154 and were tied for seventh. Junior Dustin Gideon also finished in the top 20 with a score of 157.
Seniors Heather Pantalion and Noelle Garcia lead the women's golf team of upper-classmen in their first tournament of the spring. Starting Sunday, they will spend three days in Ada, Okla., at the Oak Hills Women's Invitational, hosted by East Central University.
The LSC basketball tournament in Bartlesville, Okla., rounds out the weekend action. Both the A&M-Commerce men's and women's teams are out of the tournament, after the women failed to qualify and the men suffered an overtime loss to Tarleton State University, 83-76, on Wednesday, March 3.
Northeastern State play Midwestern State University on the men's side of the tournament at 6 p.m. tonight. Tarleton now plays West Texas A&M, who knocked off top seed Central Oklahoma on Wednesday, at 8:30 p.m. The winners of those games will face off in the final on Saturday at 7 p.m.
The tournament schedule for the women includes two semifinals on Saturday. The first of the two games is at noon and pits Tarleton State against LSC North top seed Northeastern State University. Central Oklahoma and West Texas A&M face each other in the second semifinal at 2:30 p.m. The women's tournament final is on Sunday, March 7, at 1 p.m.
