Dr. Woodyard’s organic chemistry is not to be trifled with. He’s an old school professor who believes mastery of subject matter is the foundation of superlative scoring. If every teacher held this approach a college degree would still be valuable. Furthermore, the knowledge gained combined with the lessons learned about oneself when facing difficult problems would be priceless. His classes are not checkboxes, but legitimate learning experiences. If you seek to excel in a complex, and competitive field like medicine his courses are an excellent intro. Having earned an MD and taught in NY, I can say his classes are on par with institutions that are house hold names. Cherish your experience there.

Wonder if this is not missclassified and should be WT A&M Canyon. I was in Dr. Woodyard's first Organic Chemistry class in the fall 1966 at West Texas State in Canyon, TX. I recently visited with my brother-in-law's daughter and she had him in 2013 while working on her doctorate in Ag. Science at WT. I had the highest average of any US citizen. 5 orientals graded higher. They lived and worked with oriental grad students working at the Welch Foundation research center connected to with M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston as did Woodyard. So where have I and my friend Jack McNeil been since. Well Jack retired as as an Army nurse with graduate degrees. I received a doctorate from Baylor University after an MS in biology and biochemistry. My dissertation was an AI program to teach high school students the periodic table through multimedia. Our greatest worry in Woodard's class was if he was to discover a Carbon Molecule in the universe and we would have to solve a problem he gave us. I spent my years teaching ed. psychology and computer science at the university level and retired Professor Emeritus and just finished Lisa Randall's "Knocking on Heavens Door.". He would not have qualified as my peer as he was not a real teacher only a dispenser of knowledge... but if that is all there is in the world of little carbon particles anyone interested in teaching Organic Chemistry... as his contributions are not for me to judge---perhaps there is greatness in his work. This is the hardest class you will take as an undergraduate at WT. His tests are ten times harder than any of the material you will study and the tests only get harder each year (I came across his tests 2007-2011). The final is comprehensive and has mostly stuff on there that will make you light headed in less than a second. Unless your looking for a GPA hit, I recommend you to stay away from this class and to take it at Tech.

The difficulexam class you will take as an undergraduate. If you think Organic 1 was difficult, well Organic 2 is ten times difficulter. Do not forget anything from Organic 1.There is much more material, but I found it easier than Organic 1 since it just builds on the concepts. Lab exams are friendlya of impartial unless he throws a curve ball. Know NMR very well.greatluck

Great teacher, The class is a definite "weeder" class. Thank god some teachers still believe that a student should understand the material in order to pass the class. People who are taking organic are the doctors, pharmacists, dentists......etc of the future! Thanks for everything Dr.Woodyard, your apart of a rare breed.

Don't expect to get an A if you're female-he prefers males. Online homework is ridiculous, and the exams and precise grading are difficult to get used to. He does teach well, though, and if you pass, you know your things!
