A&M-Commerce volleyball battles against underdog Southwestern Oklahoma State

A&M-Commerce volleyball dropped their second game in a row last night, losing 3-1 to LSC opponent Central Oklahoma. Earlier in the week, the Lions lost to Southern Arkansas in a non-conference game, also by a 3-1 margin.

In the Thursday night game, sophomore Rachel Robertson led the Lions with 12 kills. Senior Terra Ousley had 11 kills, and senior Naomi Mays recorded 10 kills and 13 digs for her fourth double-double this season.

Kristen Wilson was the player of the night for UCO, as she also recorded a double-double of 15 digs and 13 kills.

For their next game, the Lions travel to Southwestern Oklahoma State tomorrow for their 2 p.m. match. This is a chance for A&M-Commerce to gain an advantage over fellow conference strugglers, as the Lady Bulldogs currently sit bottom of the LSC table, with A&M-Commerce two spots ahead in 13th.

Women's Soccer

A hat trick from junior Devon Herrman helped the Lions secure a 5-0 victory over East Central University last night in their first of two away games in the next four days.

It was Herrman who opened the scoring in the 13th minute off an assist from freshman Elle DeFreitas. SeniorChelsey Haight added a second goal for the Lions after the quarter-hour mark, and it was her team-leading sixth goal of the season.

 Freshman Brionna Minde assisted on that goal, but then turned goal scorer just under 10 minutes later to make it 3-0 Lions. Herrman added her second of the game in the 37th minute and made it 4-0 A&M-Commerce at the break.

Herrman then completed the hat trick four minutes after the restart, sending a free kick into the Tigers' goal. It brings her goal tally to four on the season. Junior goalkeeper Randi Hafele recorded four saves to help maintain her fifth clean-sheet of the season.

A&M-Commerce (7-5, 3-3) now go to Tahlequah, Okla. to play Northeastern State at noon on Sunday.

Cross Country

Cross Country is back at work this weekend at the Chilli Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Arkansas tomorrow. This is the first meet since last month for the cross country team.

Senior Robert Reed has led the men's team in both meets so far, and last time out finished 60th with a time of 27:08.74. So far for the women's team it's not been Kate Donovan leading the way, as was the case so often last fall, but junior Carolyn Bell. She placed 14th at the Cowboy Jamboree on Sept. 25 with a time of 25:06.73.

Women's Golf

The women are the only golf team in action this weekend as they take on the Dallas Baptist University Golf Classic. The first of three rounds begins Sunday, Oct. 17.

Last time out at the Central Oklahoma Broncho Classic, freshman Chantry McMahan shot the best score in the field, a one-under 69, to take fourth place individually out of 88 players. Her score also helped the Lions finish in 10th place as a team.
