University seeks new diversity VP
The academic affairs department is searching for candidates to fill the Associate Vice President of Equal Opportunity and Diversity position. The department has received 44 applicants and has narrowed it to eight.
President Dan Jones said he has established guiding principles for the 2010-2011 school year, to enhance the university. Associate Provost Dr. Randy McBroom said one of Jones' principles for the 2010-2011 school year is diversity.
Jones' goal for diversity on campus is to engage in strategic outreach efforts designed to recruit, retain, and graduate highly qualified students who represent the demographic diversity of the Northeast Texas region.
"Diversity is an environment created and sustained to welcome all students, faculty, staff and visitors—processes that allow for diversity of cultures, ideas and experiences," Equal Opportunity Coordinator, Michele Vieira said.
Vieira said she feels the position will benefit A&M-Commerce.
"There are so many facets to this position and the impact it can provide to faculty and students," Vieira said. "This person is going to lead the university in embracing diversity."
According to Vieira, some of the goals set for the position include formulating and articulating the vision of A&M-Commerce in regards to diversity.
"The associate V.P. of equal opportunity and diversity is to enhance the position to target specific responsibilities regarding diversity, affirmative action, ADA (Americans for Democratic Action), etc," she said.
The academic affairs' search committee is sorting through the candidate pool to find the best applicant. Vieira said she believes the applicant must possess certain qualities to bring success to the Equal Opportunity and Diversity program, someone who is dynamic and has led diversity programs before.
"He or she should desire institutional excellence and be an excellent communicator," Vieira said.
