Women's volleyball, soccer teams prepare for weekend's games
Women's Volleyball
After a 3-2 win over Midwestern State University on Thursday, the Texas A&M University-Commerce Lions volleyball team will travel to Lawton, Oklahoma. There they will face the Cameron University Aggies this Saturday, Oct 31.
A&M-Commerce has now won four games in a row. The Lions recovered against the Midwestern State Mustangs after falling behind in the first two sets 21-25 and 20-25. They came back to win the last three sets to claim the match 25-23, 25-17, and 16-14.
The Lions are now 7-3 in conference play and 22-7 overall.
"I am pleased with how we have done so far," Head Coach Mark Pryor said.
The Aggies are 3-7 in conference play, and overall they are 15-11.
"Cameron has six seniors and, even though their record might not indicate it, they are a very good team." Pryor said. "We are going to have to play really, really well to come out of there with a win. We will do what we always do. We will [make a] game plan to see what their offensive tendencies are."
The Lions have 5 more matches left in regular season, including the game versus Cameron.
"The next five matches are going to be extremely hard," Pryor said. "If the team continues to work hard, we have a shot at finishing the season off strong."
A&M-Commerce remains third in the LSC Standings.
Women's Soccer
Friday night starts a big weekend for the A&M-Commerce women's soccer team. They have two games left in a season, which is coming down to the wire. The Lions currently sit fifth in the Lone Star Conference table with six points, the equality of two wins, separating first and sixth.
A&M-Commerce first plays top of the table University of Central Oklahoma, a match-up that has been competitive in the past regardless of the implications. In 2008, the Lions were just edged out by Central Oklahoma at home, 1-0.
"We go into the last weekend, and the first and sixth placed teams are separated by six points," Piper said. "We get two wins, and we could be anywhere from first to third, so it's definitely a big weekend."
The Lions would be aided by a West Texas A&M loss to Northeastern State on Friday, and any dropped points by Central Oklahoma, Midwestern, and Abilene Christian over the course of the weekend. Regardless, A&M-Commerce must do what has so far been difficult for them and string together a winning streak in LSC play.
Senior goalkeeper Taylor Jordan emphasized the seniors' role in these last moments of the season.
"We (seniors) always say 'One game at a time'," senior goalkeeper Taylor Jordan said. "Coming in as a freshman, you look at the big picture. We break it up into 15-minute segments in the games. If you don't do that, freshman and underclassmen can get overwhelmed. We just try to control it."
The regular season finishes up on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. against Southwestern Oklahoma State.
