Meet the Candidate: Michael Martinez
Vice President Senate Chair candidate
1. Why do you want to be the SGA Vice President?
There are many different reasons why I wish to be the Vice President of the Student Government Association. On a personal note, it would be a great learning experience that could help me expand my leadership skills and develop more on a professional level. But also as a student on campus I see a great need to have a strong group of people to be there to help represent our students with any issues that they may have. The Student Government Association's mission is to empower, enable, serve, and represent the needs and rights of students and the university community of Texas A&M University-Commerce. If elected the new Vice President I would be able to ensure that this mission is being properly carried out for the benefit of our students and community.
2. What do you feel that you offer the student body, if elected?
I've been a part of the Student Government Association for the past two years. Throughout my time in SGA I have served as the Vice Chair and the External Affairs Committee Head. I have also held several other positions at the university such as serving as a Lion Student Ambassador, and working in the Dean of Campus Life and Student Development Office that require a good work ethic and professionalism. I am very enthusiastic about SGA and I know that I would do a great job in this position.
3. What are some of your goals as the SGA Vice President?
If elected I plan to hit the ground running and start working with the new senate as soon as possible. I would like to incorporate a time over the summer break for the senate to meet up and begin working on goals for the upcoming school year so that by the time August comes around everyone will be prepped and ready. I would also like to keep up the enthusiasm that SGA has had this past year. I believe that an organization is more successful when the members are excited about the work that they are doing.
4. What sets you apart from your opponents?
All of the students running in this year's election are all great candidates to be on the Executive Board of the Student Government Association. However, I do believe that the past two years in SGA along with other personal experiences, have prepared me for this type of position. I also feel that my positive attitude would be a great asset for the Vice President to have, in order to encourage the senate to keep up their good work. I am also a very personable individual and I feel that any and every student on campus would feel comfortable coming to me with any of their concerns. As the current Vice Chair, I am the one to step in if the Vice President Senate Chair is absent. This particular position has given me a small amount of experience and an insight of what the Vice President position entails.
